Unlocking accessibility: your map to inclusive exploration
Overview
In France, 7 million individuals, comprising around 10% of the French population, navigate the intricate landscape of life with a disability.
The accessibility presents a great challenge for those living with disabilities in France.
Collaborating with Jade, an extraordinary and inspiring force, we undertook a design sprint in order to create an innovative application.
Jade, the founder of the “Handy Utopie” association, dedicated the past ten months to bravely navigating Paris in her wheelchair, assessing the accessibility of various public places. The primary goal of this initiative is to transform her personal experiences into a powerful tool that enhances the daily lives of people with disabilities.
Understanding the problem
Navigating an already intricate world becomes an additional challenge for people with disabilities, and several factors create multiple obstacles:
Difficulty accessing information: Frequently, online accessibility information doesn’t align with the real on-site conditions, leading to challenging, frustrating and sometimes dangerous situations.
Multiplicity of criteria based on disabilities. Each person with a disability has specific needs, however, it complicates the task of finding places that cater to various requirements. Accessibility criteria aren’t universal; they vary and are specific to each disability. .
The lack of a centralized and inclusive resource adds an additional layer of complexity, compelling individuals with disabilities to rely on fragmented and often imprecise source of information.
The fundamental challenge: how to provide people with disabilities with reliable, up-to-date information about the accessibility of public places, and contribute to simplifying and enhancing their daily lives?
